WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Cavern Engineer for our Houston, TX office!

The Underground Storage Team supports clients with engineering studies for site selection, feasibility, permitting, and design of cavern storage and brine production. The team also provides support to cavern operators and brine producers on existing facilities including subsidence surveys, cavern compliance, workover planning, sonar interpretation, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in a broad range of petroleum engineering activities related to underground storage and other porous media applications.
  • Support cavern storage and brine production projects. Project sites are located across the U.S. Most work is office based with some travel.
  • Comfortable working with subsurface uncertainty.
  • Develop and review regulatory documentation developed for various underground facilities.
  • Directly perform engineering evaluations and analyses using models such as UBRO, SCTS and others.
  • Provide support to Drilling Engineers, Mechanical Integrity Testing Engineers, the Workover team, the Regulatory, Engineering and Geologic Services team and others within the Underground Storage Group at WSP.
  • Participate in feasibility studies, support drilling activities (remotely), support regulatory compliance issues, and other duties as assigned.
  • Act as primary contact with client and consultants on small and medium sized projects. Be part of a team on larger projects.
  • Complete high-quality deliverables on-time within project scope-of-work and budgeted hours.
  • Work with multidisciplinary team of geologists, engineers, CAD specialists, and others to deliver successful projects
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience working as petroleum, reservoir, or drilling engineer.
  • 5+ years of experience with regular and sustained client and subcontractor engagement.
  • Experienced with technical writing and developing technical documents.
  • Experienced with well design, well construction, downhole monitoring instrumentation, and drilling operations.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites, client and regulator offices, industry conferences, etc.  Travel expected to be < 10%. 
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • This role is subject to a client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of the client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cavern design experience including use of UBRO and/or SCTS modeling
  • Knowledge of underground storage industry standards (e.g. API 1170, API 1171, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Python and other tools
  • Knowledge of hydraulic calculations
  • Project management experience and training with multidisciplinary teams and multiple external stakeholders.
  • Professional Engineering license with ability to apply by comity to other states as needed.
  • PMP certification
